November Book: Toast: The story of a Boy's Hunger by Nigel Slater

Hosted the last Tuesday of every month, join our very own Bridget and Winnie for the Honey & Co Book Club. We’ll meet monthly and read a mix of food writing, memoir and food in fiction. In November the book club book we'll be discussing is Toast: The story of a Boy's Hunger by Nigel Slater and we'd love suggestions for future reads.

Arrive at 6.30pm for a drink and we'll get going at 7pm. The Book Club will be a relaxed conversation, with lots of opportunity for chats individually and in the wider group. Feel free to bring a friend or come alone, we are a friendly bunch! The deli counter will be open until 7pm if you want a bite to eat or you can head across the road for a meal at Honey & Co. Bloomsbury afterwards.

About The Book

'My mother is scraping a piece of burned toast out of the kitchen window, a crease of annoyance across her forehead. This is not an occasional occurrence. My mother burns the toast as surely as the sun rises each morning.'

Toast is Nigel Slater's award-winning biography of a childhood remembered through food. Whether recalling his mother's surprisingly good rice pudding, his father's bold foray into spaghetti and his dreaded Boxing Day stew, or such culinary highlights as Arctic Roll and Grilled Grapefruit (then considered something of a status symbol in Wolverhampton), this remarkable memoir vividly recreates daily life in 1960s suburban England. Likes and dislikes, aversions and sweet-toothed weaknesses form a fascinating backdrop to Nigel Slater's incredibly moving and deliciously evocative portrait of childhood, adolescence and sexual awakening.

Nigel Slater is Britain's top food writer. His hugely popular columns and books have won him an enormous following for his direct, up-to-the-minute and delicious approach to food. He has written six books, has an award-winning column in the Observer and a regular column in Sainsbury's Magazine.

About The Joy Season

Honey & Co Studio launches in May with The Joy Season, the first programme of in-person events. With the single purpose of bringing more joy—because who can argue with more joy?—the season is all about taking up new hobbies, discovering new things, meeting new people, and exploring everyday pleasures. Sarit and Itamar will share their passion for ceramics—a pastime they took up during lockdown and which they now obsess over in their spare time—by leading a hands-on pinch pot making class, and they’ve invited a whole host of creatives to share their passions and pleasures through classes and workshops. From kimchi making to life drawing, from reading a good book to lino printing, there is something for everyone, all carefully curated.

Please note tickets are non-refundable.
