October Book: Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata

Hosted the last Tuesday of every month, join our very own Bridget and Winnie for the Honey & Co Book Club. We’ll meet monthly and read a mix of food writing, memoir and food in fiction. In September the book club book we'll be discussing is Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata and we'd love suggestions for future reads.

Arrive at 6.30pm for a drink and we'll get going at 7pm. The Book Club will be a relaxed conversation, with lots of opportunity for chats individually and in the wider group. Feel free to bring a friend or come alone, we are a friendly bunch! The deli counter will be open until 7pm if you want a bite to eat or you can head across the road for a meal at Honey & Co. Bloomsbury afterwards.

About The Book

Meet Keiko. Keiko is 36 years old. She's never had a boyfriend, and she's been working in the same supermarket for eighteen years. Keiko's family wishes she'd get a proper job. Her friends wonder why she won't get married. But Keiko knows what makes her happy, and she's not going to let anyone come between her and her convenience store...

One of the most celebrated of the new generation of Japanese writers, Sayaka Murata has won not only the prestigious Akutagawa Prize, but the Gunzo, Noma, and Mishima Yukio Prizes as well. Her story, 'A Clean Marriage', was featured in Granta 127 Japan. She is 36-years-old and works part-time in a convenience store.

About The Joy Season

Honey & Co Studio launches in May with The Joy Season, the first programme of in-person events. With the single purpose of bringing more joy—because who can argue with more joy?—the season is all about taking up new hobbies, discovering new things, meeting new people, and exploring everyday pleasures. Sarit and Itamar will share their passion for ceramics—a pastime they took up during lockdown and which they now obsess over in their spare time—by leading a hands-on pinch pot making class, and they’ve invited a whole host of creatives to share their passions and pleasures through classes and workshops. From kimchi making to life drawing, from reading a good book to lino printing, there is something for everyone, all carefully curated.

Please note tickets are non-refundable.
